FROM THE FLOOR: What is the salary currently?
CHIEF WINSLOW: The salary at present is $5,000 for each
office.
PRESIDENT MANSFIELD: Any other discussion on the
motion?
CHIEF JAMES N. RUSSO: [Hull, MA] Can we have some
discussion as to why the salary was dropped this year and what
the recommendation is and why?
PRESIDENT MANSFIELD: I’ll turn it back to Earl. unless
someone else would like to do it?
CHIEF CARL H. WINSLOW: Bob Nunes wants me to do all
the dirty work.
[Laughter]
CHIEF ROBERT J. NUNES: [Chicopee, MA] They don’t
beat old guys, do they?
[Laughter]
CHIEF WINSLOW: One of the reasons the Board is looking
at this is the fact we are going into a new person in the position
and we felt it is typically of any occupation that people moving
into a new job doesn’t start at the top s~lary being paid the
person leaving the job. There are also going to be some things
we are going to have to do, that the Board and Marty are going
to have to do for the current Secretary to make the transition.
And therefore, the Board felt this was two-thirds of what we are
currently paying for the position and we felt that was our
recommendation.
CHIEF RUSSO: If the job’ s salary was $10,000 and knowing
the work that Martin Jordan has done for this Association, I’m
not convinced $10,000 was even sufficient. But I will tell you
that if we’re bringing in a new Secretary-Treasurer and we’re
constantly moving places and this Association is growing and
this Conference is growing, there seems to be added responsibilities
to that position. It seems a little ridiculous to me to be
dropping the salary for the person coming in. I don’t see a lot of
incentive there for the person to come in and exert any type of
energy that this Association is going to require of him with
that.
I would substitute the motion that the salary remain $5,000
for the position.
PRESIDENT MANSFIELD: We have to vote on the first
motion. Amend the motion.
