Rule 103.1<br />

Salary scales for General Service personnel<br />

The salary scales <strong>and</strong> conditions of salary increments for staff members in the<br />

General Service category shall be those applicable to staff in the General Service<br />

category in the United Nations employed in the locality of the <strong>Authority</strong>.<br />

Rule 103.2<br />

Language allowance<br />

(a) A staff member in the General Service category shall be paid a language<br />

allowance if he or she has demonstrated proficiency in any two official languages<br />

of the <strong>Authority</strong>, by passing a proficiency examination conducted by the United<br />

Nations. <strong>Staff</strong> members whose mother tongue is an official language of the<br />

<strong>Authority</strong> must pass the prescribed examination in another official language,<br />

which may be the language in which proficiency is required for their job, in which<br />

case the language proficiency examination in the mother tongue may be waived.<br />

<strong>Staff</strong> members whose mother tongue is not an official language must pass the<br />

examination in a language other than that in which proficiency is required for their<br />

job. A second language allowance shall be paid for proficiency demonstrated by<br />

passing the prescribed test in a third official language. No staff member shall be<br />

paid a language allowance for more than two official languages.<br />

(b) <strong>Staff</strong> members in receipt of a language allowance may be required to<br />

undergo further tests at intervals of not less than five years in order to demonstrate<br />

their continued proficiency in the use of two or more official languages.<br />

(c) The amount of the allowance shall be that applicable to staff in the General<br />

Service category in the United Nations employed in the locality of the <strong>Authority</strong>.<br />

The amount payable for a second language shall be half the amount payable for<br />

the first additional language.<br />

(d) The language allowance shall be taken into account in determining United<br />

Nations Joint <strong>Staff</strong> Pension Fund, medical <strong>and</strong> group insurance contributions,<br />

overtime compensation, <strong>and</strong> payments <strong>and</strong> indemnities on separation.<br />

Rule 103.3<br />

Salary scales for Professional <strong>and</strong> higher categories<br />

(a) The salary scales <strong>and</strong> the scales of post adjustment for staff members in<br />

the Professional <strong>and</strong> higher categories shall be those applicable to staff members<br />

in the Professional <strong>and</strong> higher categories in the United Nations.<br />
