the health of others. The examination shall be made by a physician designated by<br />
the United Nations.<br />
(b) <strong>Staff</strong> members may also be required to undergo such medical examination<br />
<strong>and</strong> receive such inoculations as may be required before they go on or after they<br />
return from mission service.<br />
cHAPTER v<br />
ANNUAL AND SPEcIAL LEAvE<br />
Rule 105.1<br />
Annual leave<br />
(a) <strong>Staff</strong> members shall accrue annual leave while in full pay status at the<br />
rate of six weeks a year, subject to the provisions of rule 105.2(c). No leave shall<br />
accrue while a staff member is receiving compensation equivalent to salary <strong>and</strong><br />
allowances under rule 106.4.<br />
(b) (i) Annual leave may be taken in units of days <strong>and</strong> half days;<br />
(ii) Leave may be taken only when authorized. If a staff member is absent<br />
from work without authorization, payment of salary <strong>and</strong> allowances<br />
shall cease for the period of unauthorized absence. However, if, in<br />
the opinion of the Secretary-General, the absence was caused by<br />
reasons beyond the staff member’s control, <strong>and</strong> the staff member has<br />
accrued annual leave, the absence will be charged to that leave;<br />
(iii) All arrangements as to leave shall be subject to the exigencies of the<br />
service, which may require that leave be taken by a staff member<br />
during a period designated by the Secretary-General. The personal<br />
circumstances <strong>and</strong> preferences of the individual staff member shall,<br />
as far as possible, be considered.<br />
(c) Annual leave may be accumulated, provided that not more than twelve<br />
weeks of such leave shall be carried forward beyond 1 January of any year.<br />
(d) A staff member may, in exceptional circumstances, be granted advance<br />
annual leave up to a maximum of two weeks, provided his or her service is expected<br />
to continue for a period beyond that necessary to accrue the leave so advanced.<br />
Rule 105.2<br />
Special leave<br />
(a) (i) Special leave may be granted at the request of a staff member for<br />
advanced study or research in the interest of the <strong>Authority</strong>, in cases<br />
of extended illness, for child care or for other important reasons for<br />
such period as the Secretary-General may prescribe. In exceptional<br />
cases, the Secretary-General may, at his initiative, place a staff<br />
member on special leave with full pay if he considers such leave to<br />
be in the interest of the <strong>Authority</strong>.<br />
(ii) Special leave is normally without pay. In exceptional circumstances,<br />
special leave with full or partial pay may be granted.<br />
