El viNO.
NuEvO atlas MuNdial
HugH JOHNsON y JaNcis rObiNsON
Wine. neW World AtlAs
GONZALO ROJAS AGUILERA
this work is a
fascinating journey around
world viticulture. Map
lovers will find a bright and
colorful 352-page issue
with a total of 178 maps,
delightful from beginning
to end. those who love
wine will enjoy a book
that will also invite them
to take a literary trip through the corners of wine world. From France to
chile and from california to Japan, no place in the world has been left out
of this cartographic overview. by acclaimed authors Hugh Johnson and
Jancis robinson, the first edition was released in 1971, but the last one,
2001, has been conceived after successive new versions and updates. it
contains a description of growth processes of winegrowing activity within
the extra-european world.
¿How was Wine. new World Atlas born? According to its authors, it
was created as a result of the need to count on a map record to enhance
the overall learning of viticulture. but most importantly, as Johnson states:
“this atlas was inspired in the fact that wine is the only product whose
price depends completely on its place of origin. the better the wine, the
most accurate it defines its origin through its taste until reaching a tiny
and precise area.”
there is no doubt that this book has been essential for the progress
of the terroir concept. since its launching, and under the close eye of
its authors, it has encouraged countries and regions around the world
to create their own maps, thus allowing to awareness to be boosted,
arousing interest for new wine routes, wine tourism and the development
of a more universal notion of winegrowing.
by late 1990s, decanter magazine acknowledged it as “the wine book of
the millennium”, and it is a very prestigious publication within the academic
world due to its quality as to geography and to the accuracy of its statements,
as well as its brief comments on wines from the different countries that
make up the wide array of vintners. However, maps have been prepared
with consumers, not specialists, in mind. the atlas actually works as a guide
for travelers and buyers. some details that may turn out to be boring have
sometimes been left out for the sake of information of a rather practical
interest, which includes wine historic maps, region information and plentiful
statistical information on market production, consumption and volume.
Additionally, recent editions have included a record of labels from the most
representative wineries of each country, which makes the journey through
winegrowing regions more complete and enjoyable.
especially interesting are the pictures of landscapes with vineyards,
warehouses and cities associated to wine; careful and relevant images that
strengthen the travel feeling provided by the atlas.
Published by blume, it is available for around clP 40,000, which is a
very reasonable price if you want to have this window with a panoramic
view to winegrowing regions worldwide at home.
