Programs and
partnerships allowing
us to report, mitigate
and offset the emissions
we generate
We are working closely with communities and environmental
organizations to reduce the carbon footprint in our
operations. For this reason, we have established an alliance
with Pronatura Mexico to report, mitigate and offset the
emissions generated by our Celaya Plant, one of our largest
facilities in Mexico.
Through this partnership, since 2009 Gamesa-Quaker
supports 509 community members and their families
(2,325 indirect beneficiaries), located on 674 hectares of
forest land, in the reforestation, maintenance, and restoration
of degraded lands, community conservation areas
and agroforestry systems.
This program's main objective is to offset
carbon dioxide sent into the atmosphere, using
international principles endorsed by the Mexican
Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources,
since vegetation –particularly forests– offers
one of the most efficient ways to capture and
store carbon from the atmosphere.
Anually, we offset 13,400 tons of CO 2
, equivalent
to the emissions of 2,000 people in Mexico in
one year (Source: Pronatura).
During 2010 we worked jointly with Pronatura making
2009 emissions inventory. This report allowed us to
participate in the voluntary Greenhouse Gases Reporting
program in Mexico (GEI Mexico). This program is coordinated
by the Mexican Ministry of Environment and Natural
Resources and the Private Sector Studies Commission for
Sustainable Development (CESPEDES), technically supported
by the World Resources Institute and the World
Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).
