for those in peril on the sea
the sailors’
memorial
By CPO1 (ret’d)
JoAnn Cunningham
The original Seamen’s Memorial stood
on a bluff jutting to the sea at the
tip of Point Pleasant Park, then known
as Pleasant Point Park. This memorial
was unveiled on August 10, 1924 by the
Minister of Defence, the Honourable
E.M. MacDonald, in the presence of a
large throng of spectators. This memorial
was a small granite cross mounted on
an octagonal block of pale grey Nova
Scotia granite which listed 415 names of
Canadians killed in the Great War, who
had no known graves.
