Vesalius, VI, 2, 130-132, 2000<strong>the</strong> first director <strong>of</strong> «La Speco<strong>la</strong>», capitalized onthis aversion by pointing out that <strong>the</strong> wax mo<strong>de</strong>ls,once ma<strong>de</strong>, will obviate any fur<strong>the</strong>r need fordissection. The Grand Duke purchased a block<strong>of</strong> houses on Via Romana and provi<strong>de</strong>d <strong>the</strong>necessary funds for materials and personnel.ExhibitsAt present, <strong>the</strong>re are twenty whole-bodymo<strong>de</strong>ls, one skeleton, one torso and onedisassembled body «Venus», which has removableparts to show <strong>the</strong> succession <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>organs insi<strong>de</strong> <strong>the</strong> human female, including afetus. In addition, <strong>the</strong>re are 473 woo<strong>de</strong>n p<strong>la</strong>queswith one or more wax mo<strong>de</strong>ls arranged asa group (4). Each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> woo<strong>de</strong>n p<strong>la</strong>ques isenclosed in a g<strong>la</strong>ss case. Often <strong>the</strong>re is anadjoining illustration, usually a water-colorrendition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> actual mo<strong>de</strong>l, with lea<strong>de</strong>r linesand numbers at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> line. The f<strong>la</strong>tdrawers at <strong>the</strong> bottom <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> g<strong>la</strong>ss case containone or more sheets with <strong>the</strong> numbers and <strong>the</strong>legend, i.e. <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> structure, <strong>the</strong>attachments and function <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> muscles, <strong>the</strong>nerve supply, and o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>de</strong>tails. The mo<strong>de</strong>ls,located in eight rooms, are grouped by regionsor systems.Fontana envisaged that <strong>the</strong> collection wouldtake <strong>the</strong> p<strong>la</strong>ce, to a <strong>la</strong>rge extent, <strong>of</strong> a treatise onanatomy and <strong>the</strong> dissection <strong>of</strong> a body. He<strong>de</strong>signed this method <strong>of</strong> disp<strong>la</strong>ying and <strong>la</strong>belling<strong>the</strong> mo<strong>de</strong>ls so that <strong>the</strong> collection could be usedas a teaching aid even in <strong>the</strong> absence <strong>of</strong> ateacher or gui<strong>de</strong>. A harbinger <strong>of</strong> our present dayself-study methods, it is unfortunate that mo<strong>de</strong>ls<strong>of</strong> such high quality are so un<strong>de</strong>r utilized. Theywould make i<strong>de</strong>al study specimens for stu<strong>de</strong>nts<strong>of</strong> health sciences who do not have access tocadaver material.Small wax mo<strong>de</strong>lsIn addition to <strong>the</strong> life-size mo<strong>de</strong>ls <strong>the</strong>re areseven small-scale mo<strong>de</strong>ls, approximately 75cm. high, mainly showing various <strong>la</strong>yers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>muscles <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> body. Four <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se mo<strong>de</strong>lscorrespond very closely to four <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> life-sizemo<strong>de</strong>ls. There are simi<strong>la</strong>r small mo<strong>de</strong>ls at <strong>the</strong>Wellcome Museum <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> History <strong>of</strong> Medicine, apart <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Science Museum in South Kensingtonin London. It is <strong>de</strong>duced that <strong>the</strong> Londonmo<strong>de</strong>ls, ma<strong>de</strong> prior to 1775, were precursors <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> small mo<strong>de</strong>ls at «La Speco<strong>la</strong>» whichprece<strong>de</strong>d <strong>the</strong> life-size mo<strong>de</strong>ls at «La Speco<strong>la</strong>».Dating <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>de</strong>lsEven before <strong>the</strong> first dissector was hired at<strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> 1772 <strong>the</strong>re were several mo<strong>de</strong>lsextant. Around 1772, in <strong>the</strong> Pa<strong>la</strong>zzo Pitti, weresix rooms with anatomical mo<strong>de</strong>ls (2). The <strong>la</strong>rgemo<strong>de</strong>ls date from 1782 and after. Based on <strong>the</strong>inscriptions on <strong>the</strong> base <strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>de</strong>lsand biographical sleuthing, it can be <strong>de</strong>ducedthat <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>de</strong>ls were ma<strong>de</strong> between 1775 and1785. Obviously, <strong>the</strong> early mo<strong>de</strong>ls were basednot on dissection but on some anatomicaltreatise. Detailed study <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>de</strong>ls shows that<strong>the</strong>y were mo<strong>de</strong>lled on <strong>the</strong> anatomical workTabu<strong>la</strong>e SceletietMusculorum Corporis Humani(1747) by Bernard Sigfried Albinus (6). In turn,Albinus' work could be traced back to that <strong>of</strong>Bartolomeo Eustachio (1520-1574)(5). Of <strong>the</strong>forty-seven anatomical p<strong>la</strong>tes to be publishedas De dissensionibus ac controversis anatomicisby Eustachio (7), thirty-nine p<strong>la</strong>tes were lost anddid not come to light till 150 years <strong>la</strong>ter. Whenfound <strong>the</strong>y were published as Tabu<strong>la</strong>eanatomicae in 1714 (8).Copies - a measure <strong>of</strong> excellenceCopies <strong>of</strong> specimens in «LaSpeco<strong>la</strong>», alongwith some originals, exist or did exist in suchdiverse p<strong>la</strong>ces as London, Vienna, Lei<strong>de</strong>n, Budapest,Montpellier and even in <strong>the</strong> new world atNew Orleans (Louisiana). In addition <strong>the</strong>y arefound in <strong>the</strong> <strong>de</strong>partments <strong>of</strong> anatomy at Cagliari,Padua and Bologna.131
