A great <strong>de</strong>al <strong>of</strong>archeological and written medical sources andhistorical buildings re<strong>la</strong>ted with medical historyare found in this geographical area, though somehave not been studied yet. Medicine in Anatoliathrough history, with emphasis on famousAnatolian physicians, surgeons and pharmacistsand <strong>the</strong>ir works is expected to be specificallyemphasized.4. The Re<strong>la</strong>tion Between <strong>the</strong> TurkishMedicine and <strong>the</strong> Medicine <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Eastern and Western Worlds in <strong>the</strong> Past.Re<strong>la</strong>tions with <strong>the</strong> peoples <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world haveaffected <strong>the</strong> transfer <strong>of</strong> medical knowledge andpractice through traditional and scientificelements.Turks foun<strong>de</strong>d several states throughouthistory. For example, <strong>the</strong> dominion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> OttomanState exten<strong>de</strong>d on three continents, namelyAsia, Europe and Africa. Therefore, <strong>the</strong> historicalbackground <strong>of</strong> many nations in <strong>the</strong>se continentscan not be written without a knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>history <strong>of</strong> Turkic peoples during <strong>the</strong> transfer <strong>of</strong>cultures. Several countries formerly within <strong>the</strong>Ottoman Empire have a long common period inhistory with it. Besi<strong>de</strong>s, several foreign physicians,surgeons, botanists etc. visited and settledin <strong>the</strong> Ottoman State; or were invited and appointedto serve in <strong>of</strong>ficial institutions. The importance <strong>of</strong>trans<strong>la</strong>tions and <strong>the</strong> role <strong>of</strong> different <strong>la</strong>nguages in<strong>the</strong> mutual health re<strong>la</strong>tions are expected to beemphasized as well as scientific, political, socia<strong>la</strong>nd religious elements <strong>of</strong> medicine.5. Historical Sources <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Complementary Medicine :Complementary medicine or alternative medicineas known wi<strong>de</strong>ly, is a matter <strong>of</strong> discussiontoday. As <strong>the</strong>re can not be an alternative formedicine, <strong>de</strong>aling with <strong>the</strong> origins <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> methodscalled alternative will be a valuable contributionto <strong>the</strong> discussion. As we know that complementarymedicine has its roots in ancient medicaltraditions, such as Chinese, Indian, Hippocratic,Is<strong>la</strong>mic medicine etc, <strong>the</strong>se discussions will alsohelp us in <strong>de</strong>termining <strong>the</strong> role, <strong>the</strong> value and <strong>the</strong>p<strong>la</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> complementary medical practices today.It would also be possible for us to find answersto questions about what is believed to be missingin <strong>the</strong> contemporary medicine which is to becomplemented by alternatives. Discussion <strong>of</strong>complementary medicine from <strong>the</strong> perspective<strong>of</strong> medical ethics and its evaluation through <strong>the</strong>scientific aspect is also expected.6.
