«Lasciare alle cose il tempo di svilupparsi, di farsi, per me
è naturale» 17 . È cresciuto infatti in campagna, con i tempi
lunghi della cultura agricola che non ha fretta di vedere
risultati immediati e sicuri: investe e semina oggi per
raccogliere i frutti domani.
A ben vedere, Spazio di luce esposto a Ostia è il
negativo degli Alberi. Anziché essere progressivamente
scortecciato, il tronco è svuotato, ridotto a mera scorza,
integra per la prima volta. Scrigno del 2007, infatti, è un
tronco tagliato le cui due metà sono accostate a
nascondere come in uno scrigno il tesoro della linfa che
vi scorre dentro. Matrice de sève, esposto nel 2009 nella
Court Vitré dell’Ecole des Beaux Arts di Parigi, dove
Penone insegna regolarmente e, due anni dopo, al
Musée des Arts Contemporains-Site du Grand-Hornu, è
invece un abete gigantesco,
fortemente rastremato,
abbattuto per
malattia in un parco
naturale francese, la
Valle delle Meraviglie,
caratterizzato dalla
presenza di sculture
rupestri. Vale precisare che Penone utilizza solo alberi
malati, dunque condannati, oppure già abbattuti, come
quello centenario di Versailles, caduto nel 1999 a seguito
di una terribile tempesta. Perché «La falegnameria è
l’equivalente della macelleria, l’ebanisteria della
salumeria, il taglio, l’abbattimento di un bosco equivale al
mattatoio. Abbattere, rendere orizzontale un corpo
verticale, è un’azione violenta, crudele, feroce, epica che
interferisce nel ciclo vitale di altri esseri» 18 . Penone
recupera l’abete con tutti i suoi rami, lo sdraia anzi su di
essi, come un grande animale sulle sue zampe, e, dopo
averlo tagliato a metà, dispone le due parti in sequenza,
a formare un asse lungo 24 metri. All’interno la linfa
scorre come l’acqua nel letto del fiume, in una cavità
disomogenea, ricca di asperità, concavità, deviazioni.
Per evitare che la linfa sfugga dal tronco, Penone

the negative of the Alberi. Rather than being
progressively peeled, the trunk is emptied, reduced to a
mere skin, integral for the first time. The 2007 piece
Scrigno (Shrine) is a trunk cut in two, its halves placed
beside one another to create a shrine that conceals the
treasure of lymph running inside it. Matrice de sève
(Matrix of Lymph), shown in 2009 inside the Court Vitré
dell’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, where Penone
regularly teaches and, two years later, at the Musée des
Arts Contemporains-Site du Grand-Hornu is, instead, a
gigantic, sharply tapered fir tree, felled due to illness in a
French natural park, the Vallée des Merveilles, famous for
its stone age petroglyphs. It is important to note that
Penone utilises only ill and condemned trees, or trees
that have already felled, such as the centenary cedar
from Versailles, which fell in 1999 during a terrible storm.
Because “the sawmill is equivalent to the butcher’s shop,
the cabinet-maker’s to a sausage factory, the cutting and
felling of a forest is equivalent to an abattoir. Felling,
rendering a vertical body horizontal, is a violent, cruel,
ferocious and epic action that interferes with the vital
cycle of other beings.” 18 Penone recovered the tree with
all of its branches, laying it down on them, like some large
animal on its legs and, after cutting it in half, set the two
pieces end to end to create a 24-meter long axis. Inside it
lymph runs like water in the bed of a river, in an uneven
hollow, full of roughness, cavities and deviations. To keep
