atomi di cui sono costituiti tutti gli esseri viventi. Ma quello
di Long, lungi dall’essere geometricamente perfetto, è il
risultato dell’assemblaggio di migliaia di pietre tutte
diverse nella foggia e nelle dimensioni. Come l’umanità,
suggerisce lui stesso, un insieme di individui la cui
diversità garantisce la vitalità dell’insieme. Se i pezzi
fossero tutti uguali, il cerchio si ridurrebbe ad arida forma
geometrica, mentre se ne mancasse qualcuno, l’insieme
risulterebbe fatalmente compromesso. E nella sinagoga di
Ostia, in occasione della Giornata della Memoria, la
metafora diventa un monito. Del resto, afferma, la
creazione non consiste nella scelta della forma ma in
quella del luogo dove collocarla 74 . Dunque, scultura e
luogo coincidono, sono indissolubili, un po’ come i lavori
“in situ” di Daniel Buren. Con la peculiarità, anticipiamo,
che «il luogo per la scultura si trova camminando» 75 .
Perché Bristol-Rome? Perché la città dove nasce nel 1945
è l’epicentro delle sue lunghe peregrinazioni intorno al
mondo; lì torna e tuttora vive, lì attinge spesso i materiali
per le sculture. Come per Penone, il luogo di origine, con
le scogliere e le cave di calcare, le maree, i fiumi, gli
straripamenti fangosi,
è la prima cornice del
lavoro. Altrettanto
decisive sono state
durante l’infanzia le
lunghe passeggiate
lungo i fiumi, in
bicicletta o a piedi,
con il padre, con cui condivide la passione per il mare e
per le maree imponenti del fiume Bristol Channel, le
seconde al mondo per importanza e dimensioni. «Tutta
quella energia cosmica è ancora nel mio lavoro. Così, in
un certo senso, quando sono cresciuto, ho usato molto la
mia esperienza dell’infanzia» 76 . Mentre dal lato della
madre, che vive ancora a Bristol, eredita la passione per
le discussioni politiche e intellettuali e soprattutto per
l’arte. «Il mio lavoro nasce decisamente da un
background stabile, da genitori incoraggianti e da

the Mediterranean. The circle is an essential form that
evokes the cosmos as well as the cells and atoms of
which living beings are composed. Yet that of Long, far
from being geometrically perfect, is the result of the
assembly of thousands of stones of differing forms and
sizes. Like humanity, the artist himself suggests, a
collection of individuals whose diversity guarantees the
vitality of the whole. If the pieces were all the same, the
circle would be reduced to an arid geometric form, and if
pieces were missing, the whole would be fatally
compromised. In the synagogue in Ostia, in occasion of
the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, this
metaphor becomes a warning. What is more, he states,
“creation in my art is not in the common forms I use […]
but the places I choose to put them in.” 74 Thus sculpture
and site coincide, they are indissoluble, similar to the in
situ works of Daniel Buren. With the peculiarity, we
anticipate here, that “the place for sculpture is found by
walking.” 75 Why Bristol-Rome? Because the city where
he was born in 1945 is the epicentre of his lengthy
wanderings around the globe; he returns and lives there,
often borrowing the materials for his sculptures. Similar to
Penone, the site of his origins, with its cliffs and limestone
quarries, tides, rivers and muddy flood plains, represents
the initial frame of his work. Equally decisive were his
lengthy travels along the river, by bike or on foot, with his
father, with whom he shared a passion for the sea and the
imposing tides of the Bristol Channel, the second largest
in the world for its size and importance. “All that cosmic
energy is still there in my work. So in a way, as I’ve grown
up, I’ve used a lot of my childhood experience.” 76 While
from his mother, who still lives in Bristol, he inherited a
passion for political and intellectual discussions and
above all for art. “My work definitely comes from a stable
background, supportive parents and happy childhood.” 77
In Bristol he enrolled in 1962 at the West of England
