Heidegger, gli artisti concreti Max Bill e Richard Lohse.
Nel 1966 approda finalmente a Parigi, capitale
effervescente intellettualmente e artisticamente. Aderisce
all’Internazionale Situazionista e fonda la casa editrice
indipendente Agentzia.
continuare a produrre cultura.
coevo. Invia ad amici, galleristi e illustri sconosciuti scelti
a caso sull’elenco telefonico (come a Ostia!) 800
sacchetti di plastica con impressa la
domanda Is Their Life on Earth? (È la
loro vita sulla terra?) invitandoli a
liberarsi di tutto ciò che non desiderano
più appartenga al loro passato. La
risposta arriva dopo due anni: 300
sacchetti pieni di oggetti sono seppelliti
nelle fondazioni del nuovo grattacielo
in Germany he encountered the Zero Group, Fluxus and
Yves Klein, in Switzerland he met the philosophers Karl
Jaspers and Martin Heidegger, the concrete artists Max
Bill and Richard Lohse. In 1966 he finally landed in the
intellectually and artistically effervescent capital of Paris.
He adhered to the Situationist International and founded
the Agentzia independent publishing house. He
experienced the season of 1968 to the fullest: “[…] 1968
was somehow a relief for me, because I was really there.
But the most important factor in my life remains the war I
didn’t fight. Perhaps this explains why the notion of
absence is so important in my life and work.” 58 We are not
speaking of representing the past, of obsessively evoking
it to ward off its possible return: a commitment
undertaken nobly and respectably by the artists of the
previous generation, in primis Joseph Beuys, direct
witnesses to the tragedies whose mourning and memory
they were the first to elaborate through art. Neither are we
speaking of demonising the past, imagining that its
brutality precludes the possibility of continuing to produce
culture. “I believe that National Socialism, like every
revolution, was a cultural revolt, and thus a cultural
phenomenon. Culture after Auschwitz accordingly means
culture after culture. The Third Reich, like all ‘barbarism’,
must be explained culturally.” 59
The year 1968 was an important one:
Gerz’s first book, which united
photography and texts; his first
performance, when he attached the
words Art corrupts to the doors of the
Cathedral in Florence and the pedestal
below Michelangelo’s David; the
following year in Basel the same text,
translated into various languages, was posted in various
parts of the city. The first “monument” was coeval. He
sent friends, gallery owners and unknowns people
selected randomly from a telephone directory (as in
Ostia!), 800 plastic bags bearing the question Is Their Life
on Earth?, inviting them to liberate themselves of
