vergato su vetro, è a contribuire all’opera. Una moltitudine
di targhe rosse reca i nomi di persone di Conventry o di altro
luogo, famose o sconosciute, vive o morte, giovani o
vecchie, vere o inventate, fidanzate o sposate.
Nello stesso spirito è
pensato Square of the
European promise nel 2007-
2011 a Bochum. Nel corso di
quattro anni Gerz invita gli
abitanti della città tedesca a
scrivere il loro nome come
promessa per un futuro
condiviso da tutti i popoli europei. L’idea del lavoro nasce
dalla presenza a Bochum dell’Heroes Memorial Hall,
realizzato nel 1931 nella torre in rovina della Chiesa di
Cristo, dove la lista dei nomi dei caduti nel corso della prima
guerra mondiale è accompagnata da una seconda lista
dedicata agli “stati nemici” della Germania: quelli che
anticipano drammaticamente il secondo conflitto mondiale
e la distruzione dell’Europa e che sono invece divenuti, a
distanza di decenni, vicini e amici. Duplice l’operazione di
Gerz: tradurre una lista di morte e distruzione in una lista di
esseri viventi; tradurre una opposizione in convivenza
multiculturale, in rispetto e tolleranza dell’altro. Tra i firmatari
c’è ovviamente lo stesso Gerz. RUHR 2010 è il progetto
varato dalla regione in occasione della sua nomina a
Capitale Europea della Cultura. Nota per l’industria
mineraria, la regione si è nel tempo riconvertita in quella
manifatturiera. Gerz partecipa con una iniziativa che come
names of people from Coventry or other cities, famous
and unknown, living or dead, young or old, true or
invented, engaged or married.
The same spirit is behind Square of the European
Promise from 2007-2011 in Bochum. Over four years,
Gerz invited the residents of this German city to write their
names as a promise for the future, shared by all
European people. The idea of the work is born of the
presence in Bochum of the Heroes Memorial Hall,
realised in 1931 in the ruined tower of the Church of
Christ, where the list of names of those who fell during the
First World War is accompanied by a second list
dedicated to “Germany’s enemy States”: those that
dramatically anticipated the Second World War and the
destruction of Europe only to become, some decades
later, neighbours and friends. Gerz’s operation is twofold:
he translated a list of death and destruction into a list of
living beings; he translated opposition into multicultural
coexistence, based on
respect and tolerance.
The artist’s name is
obviously amongst the
signees. RUHR 2010 is
the project created by
the Regional Government
in occasion of its
nomination as European Capital of Culture. Known for its
mining industry, the region was converted over time into a
manufacturing zone. Gerz participated in an initiative that,
as usual, presupposed lengthy times for its preparation
and realisation. 2-3 Streets opts, as the title explains, for
the street, in reality for 2-3 streets in three towns in the
Ruhr Basin: Duisburg, Dortmund and Mülheim an der
Ruhr. “Would you like to live rent free for a year?” The
announcement appeared on a number of real estate
company websites offering anyone using the Internet the
possibility of living free for one year in a number of empty
apartments along the selected streets. The apartments
