Spesso associato all’Arte Minimalista per le forme
elementari, all’Arte Concettuale per il carattere temporaneo
delle sculture, spesso invisibili se non attraverso la
loro documentazione, soprattutto alla Land Art per
l’opzione per la natura, per
non parlare della tradizione
romantica della pittura
inglese di paesaggio, Long,
nel prendere nettamente le
distanze dalla Land Art,
sente maggiore affinità con
il Minimalismo, il Concettualismo
e l’Arte Povera. Quando dichiara del resto: «Tutti
i miei lavori e le mie azioni non hanno nessun significato
aldifuori di quello che sono […] sono auto-sufficienti e non
hanno bisogno di nessuna spiegazione» 90 , non echeggia
forse la tautologia di Frank Stella «quello che vedi è
quello che vedi»? A differenza delle installazioni
gigantesche e monumentali della Land Art americana, gli
interventi di Long sono discreti, quasi impercettibili, a
scala umana, quella del suo corpo che cammina o
compie gesti a sua misura e portata con i materiali che
incontra lungo il suo percorso. Come commenta, il suo
lavoro esplora il territorio a metà strada tra il
monumentalismo degli interventi di Land Art e, agli
antipodi, il desiderio di non lasciare alcuna traccia. Come
efficacemente le definisce: «Le sculture sono una sorta di
luoghi di sosta nel corso di lunghi viaggi a piedi» 91 .
Diversa la filosofia che guida i due approcci: «Io sono
monochrome or polychrome,
as in Black White
Green Pink Purple Circle
or constructed only of the
radii of a circle, as in Circle
of Life. Long is often
associated with Minimalist
art for his elementary
forms, with Conceptual art due to the temporary nature of
his sculptures, often invisible if not aided by their
documentation, and above all with Land Art due to the
use of nature, not to mention the romantic tradition of
English landscape painting. Clearly declaring his distance
from Land Art, Long feels more akin to the world of
Minimalism, Conceptual Art and Arte Povera. What is
more, when he declared: “I think all my works, my actions,
have no meaning outside what they are […] they should
be completely self-contained, they shouldn’t need any
explanation,” 90 is he not echoing the tautology of Frank
Stella “What I see is what I see”? Unlike the gigantic and
monumental installations of the American land artists,
Long’s interventions are discrete, almost imperceptible, at
the human scale, the
scale of his body that
walks or completes gestures
within his scale and
reach using materials
encountered along his
walk. As he stated, his
work explores the territory
that lies between the monumental interventions of
Land Art and, at the antipodes, the desire to leave no sign
of his passage. As he effectively stated: “The sculptures
are sort of stopping places along walking journeys.” 91
A diverse philosophy guides the two approaches: “I
suppose I’m English in the sense that I’m part of a culture
of public rights of way and footpaths and national parks.
So I have a freedom to use the land without needing to
own it, just by walking on it,” 92 while the frontier spirit that
