un’infanzia felice» 77 . E a Bristol
s’iscrive nel 1962 al West of
England College of Art, dove sono
ambientati i primi lavori. Snowball
Track del 1964 è una palla di neve
che rotolando aumenta di dimensione
e lascia una traccia sul
terreno.
Mentre Walking Man and
Plaster Path del 1965, è una forma ondulata di plastica
poggiata sul pavimento dello studio e accompagnata da
una figura umana che cammina. In questi tre lavori
aurorali c’è già in nuce
tutta la poetica di Long:
la natura, le forme
essenziali, l’uomo in
cammino come misura
del lavoro. Quanto alla
prima, così commenta:
«La fonte del mio
lavoro è la natura. La uso con rispetto e libertà» 78 . I lavori
donano cioè un nuovo assetto alla natura, ma
temporaneo, presto da quest’ultima riassorbito. Quanto
alle forme: «Un cerchio, una linea: vanno bene, sono
astratti, fanno parte del sapere comune. Appartengono a
tutti e, allo stesso modo, al passato, al presente e al
futuro» 79 . Forme universali personalizzate dai materiali e
dai luoghi. Infine, «Il mio lavoro è diventato una semplice
metafora della vita. Una persona che cammina per la sua
strada lasciando il segno del suo passaggio. È una
affermazione della mia scala umana e dei miei sensi:
quanto lontano posso andare, quante pietre riesco a
prendere, le mie esperienze particolari» 80 . Come
acutamente osserva Anne Seymour, «Long è un superbo
size as it rolled and left a trace on the ground. When, due
to its excessive weight, the ball stopped rolling, Long
photographed its path: this was the sculpture, produced
by nature in nature, and lasting for only a short time. Two
years later, Turf Circle, realised in his parents’ garden,
was prophetic: the grassy surface was cut in a circular
manner, placed at a lower level on the site, and then
photographed. While Walking Man and Plaster Path from
1965, was an undulating plastic
form siting on the floor of his
studio, accompanied by a walking
human figure. In these three
auroral works Long’s poetic is
already present in nuce: nature,
essential forms, a walking figure
as the means of measuring the
piece. Regarding the first, he had this to say: “The source
of my work is nature. I use it with respect and freedom.” 78
The works thus bring a new organisation to nature,
though it is temporary, and soon absorbed by it.
Regarding the forms: “A circle, a line: they look good, they
are abstract, they are common knowledge. They belong
to everyone and equally to the past, the present and the
future.” 79 Universal forms personalised by materials and
the site. Finally, “My work has become a simple metaphor
for life. A figure walking down his road, making his mark.
It is an affirmation of my human scale and senses: how
far I walk, what stones I pick up, my particular
experiences.” 80 As Anne Seymour acutely observed:
“Long is a superb organic compass. Walking is his pencil
and his burin, a system for delineating, for measuring
time and existence.” 81 As for Penone sculpture originates
in the contact between the body and nature, thus for Long
sculpture is the trace of his walking, in different contexts
and at different latitudes, in deserts, across fields, ice
floes, in the mountains, forests and along rivers. Expelled
from the West of England College for reasons that were
never made clear, as long as it wasn’t due to his
excessively vivacious intellect and restlessness, after
