tempo e distanza, memoria e viaggio» 86 . Specificando
scultura realizzata camminando, variamente documentata,
e quella costruita all’interno degli spazi espositivi. Stessi i
interventi all’esterno e all’interno si equivalgono, lo stesso
processuali, dell’Arte Povera, europei e americani,
l’incontro tra Long e Penone.
Specifying that the third object is in movement, that the
temporal distance is 168 hours, and the spatial distance
225 miles.
The two works thus established a direct relationship
between the sculpture realised while walking,
documented at various times, and that constructed inside
exhibition spaces. The same materials, found in nature,
fragments of wood, stones or mud distributed across the
floor or walls by hand, the same dimensions and the
same orientations. While the photographs, the maps and
texts relative to the external interventions “feed the
imagination” and distil the experiences, the sculptures in
the gallery “feed the senses” 87 with the physicality of
stones and wood, with the gesturality of the imprint, the
sketches and drippings of mud. If the interior and exterior
interventions are rendered equal, the same takes place
for the diverse ways of recording, describing and
documenting the sculptures while walking. The maps, for
example play a very different role
than photography: they combine
images and language, they demonstrate
the history, geography
and names of places, they inspire
and suggest ideas and places
where to walk, they are
impossible to substitute companions
of travel and orientation, they indicate the entire
path of the walks, demonstrating at each moment the
road travelled and that to be travelled.
At the Frankfurt exhibition Long encountered Konrad
Fischer: present as an artist, the following year he
opened the gallery-cenacle in Düsseldorf, where
Minimalist, Conceptual, Process, Arte Povera, European
and American artists could compare ideas and research,
beyond the traditional confines of painting, sculpture and
architecture, beyond the barriers between the spaces of
art and those of life, to create an entirely new relation with
the viewer. This was site during these years of the
encounter between Long and Penone. In 1968 Fischer
