ricordino, ma, trattandosi di cimiteri, sono tautologicamente
interrati. «Un monumento all’assenza in un
monumento assente e per gli assenti» 69 . Come a Ostia,
come ad Amburgo, il monumento è l’esposizione discreta,
in ogni luogo con mezzi più consoni – nel prato di Ostia
cartelli botanici, nella piazza urbana le pietre del manto
stradale – di nomi: una tradizione antichissima di ricordare,
ancora in auge; una scelta moderna e concettuale
di fare arte in memoria.
Terzo caso, Le Monument vivant di Biron, piccolo centro
della Dordogna, realizzato con gli
studenti della scuola municipale di belle
arti di Bordeaux e inaugurato nel 1996.
Nel 1994 Gerz è incaricato di sostituire
il vecchio monumento del 1920
dedicato ai morti della Prima guerra
mondiale e ai deportati della Seconda, e
ormai fatiscente.
Anziché progettarne uno nuovo, Gerz trasforma quello
esistente in monumento vivente. Lo ricostruisce esattamente
com’era, un obelisco in arenaria su basamento
gradonato ma vi affigge 127 targhe di smalto rosse su cui
sono incise, anonimamente, le altrettante risposte fornite
dalla totalità degli abitanti del villaggio a domande relative
alla guerra, la pace, la morte ma anche la loro vita. Grazie
ai pensieri delle persone vive, il monumento consente
agli abitanti di Biron di conoscersi e di relazionarsi. «Il
monumento ha cambiato le distanze: ci guardiamo in un
altro modo, non senza sorpresa» oppure «Le scritte sul
monumento sono bellissime. Adesso, sono fiera della
gente del paese. È il nostro monumento, adesso» 70 . Un
monumento in progress: gli stessi quesiti saranno rivolti
ai nuovi abitanti e ai giovani, quando maggiorenni.
L’invisibilità è qui dell’artista che si limita a tradurre il
monumento agli abitanti in quello degli abitanti che
ricordano prendendo la parola in prima persona.
Quattro anni dopo, The Witnesses of Cahors partecipa al
processo contro il criminale Maurice Papon, ufficiale
dell’esercito di Vichy, responsabile della deportazione

The third example, Le Monument vivant (The Living
Monument) in Biron, a small centre in the Dordogne, was
realised with students from the municipal school of fine
arts of Bordeaux and inaugurated in 1996, after Gerz was
commissioned in 1994 to substitute an existing though
dilapidated 1920 monument dedicated to the town’s
victims of the First World War and those deported during
the Second.
Rather than designing a new work, Gerz transformed the
existing one into a living monument. He reconstructed it
exactly as it was, a limestone obelisk on a stepped base,
though with the addition of 127 enamelled red plaques
bearing the anonymous responses provided by all of the
village’s inhabitants to
questions about war,
peace, death and even
their lives. Thanks to the
thoughts of the living, the
monument allows the
inhabitants of Biron to
know and relate to one
another. “The monument changed distances: we look at
each other in a different way, and not without some
surprise”, or “The writings on the monument are beautiful.
Now, I am proud of the people of the village. It is our
monument now.” 70 A monument in progress: these same
questions will be asked of new residents and young
people when they come of age. The invisibility here is that
of the artist, who limits himself to translating a monument
