azioni reali» 94 , precisa in Five, six, pick up sticks,
pubblicato nel 1980, sorta di decalogo redatto per
scongiurare dubbi e fraintendimenti. Un apparente
paradosso, come quello che spinge Jannis Kounellis a
definirsi pittore.
tempo, spazio e movimento reali.
Piero Gilardi, Long partecipa nello stesso 1969 alla mostra
«Arte Povera+Azioni Povere» negli Arsenali di Amalfi. La
performance di Long si svolge all’esterno e consiste nello
Cornell University. Earth Art riunisce artisti americani, da
Hans Haacke a Robert Smithson, Robert Morris e Dennis
Oppenheim, e artisti europei quali Dibbets, Long e il
tedesco Günther Uecker. Untitled, 27 East Avenue, Ithaca,
animated the Americans pushed them to continually gain
ground. Long, in other words, created a rapport with
nature that was on par, free and respectful, one of
relationship and not of opposition. Using a formal
repertoire that was abstract and anti-naturalistic, though
“laid down in the real spaces of the world.” 93 “My work is
real, not illusory or conceptual. It is about real stones, real
time, real actions,” 94 he explained in Five, six, pick up
sticks, published in 1980, a sort of decalogue intended to
ward off doubts and misunderstandings. An apparent
paradox, such as that which pushed Jannis Kounellis to
refer to himself as a painter. In other words Long created
images that did not represent the real, but were made of
real materials, real actions, real time, real space and real
movement.
Once again at the suggestion of Fischer, and at the
request of the Turinese artist Piero Gilardi, and once
again in 1969, Long participated in the exhibition “Arte
Povera+Azioni Povere” at the Arsenali in Amalfi. Long’s
performance took place outside, and consisted of shaking
hands with passers-by for an entire day while wearing a
T-shirt from the Sculpture Department at the St. Martin’s
School. This while a timber beam, painted white, was
suspended in front of a cliff face that, seen from a
distance, resembled a white line. However, 1969 was
also the year of the fundamental Land Art show at Cornell
University. “Earth Art” brought together American artists,
from Hans Haacke to Robert Smithson, Robert Morris
and Dennis Oppenheim, and such European artists as
Dibbets, Long and the German Günther Uecker. Untitled,
27 East Avenue, Ithaca, New York 1969 was the title of
Long’s work: 26 fragments of grey schist quarried in a
cave in nearby Ithaca. Before dawn on opening day, Long
selected 12 flat stones and composed a rectangle,
distancing the pieces 7 paces from one another across
the sloping lawn in front of the museum: the entire form of
the work could not be captured from any one point of
view, but only imagined.
