JOSEPH KOSUTH, Toledo, Ohio 1945 “Il neon ha una fragilità che lo rende più simile alla scrittura. Non è permanente. Ha una diversa dimensione della permanenza”. (1) “Red”: lampante tautologia, luce che scrive e comunica l’evidenza di ciò che si vede. Un’opera che apparentemente altro non fa, se non “dire” se stessa. Proclamarsi. Metà degli anni Sessanta: la Pop Art è nel pieno fulgore, dirompe e tracima oltre gli argini di critica e pubblico, tesa a rifl ettere sempre più lucidamente sui temi del logo e del marchio, dell’oggetto e della merce. D’altra parte, le esperienze del Minimalismo: le verifi che sul rapporto forma-signifi cato, le riduzioni ad operare in nome di un’arte del levare, destinata ad estendersi dall’opera plastica o pittorica all’ambiente, artifi ciale e naturale, fi no ad incrociarsi con la Land Art. Analisi linguistiche e semantiche che l’arte concettuale, negli stessi anni, aveva avviato attraverso esperienze e personalità disparate, dal gruppo inglese “Art and Language” a Sol Le Witt, dal belga Broodthaers agli americani Bochner, Darboven e, naturalmente, Joseph Kosuth. Nel 1969, un anno in anticipo rispetto alla prima esposizione sull’arte concettuale, “Conceptual Art and Conceptual Aspects” allestita al New York Cultural Center, esce il suo testo “Art after Philosophy”, teso ad indagare le relazioni fra la speculazione fi losofi ca e quella artistica: necessaria rifl essione per l’artista americano che, avendo intrecciato gli studi in antropologia e fi losofi a a quelli seguiti alla School of Visual Arts di New York, provava fi n dalle prime opere a fondere le fonti più disparate, dalle defi nizioni lessicali alla Stele di Rosetta, indagando sui testi di Freud, Thomas Mann e Kafka, nel tentativo di “tematizzare” le domande, le questioni poste dal confl itto fra arte e linguaggio, arte e signifi cato. Contaminata dalla presenza di fotografi a, video, oggetti, ampliata in ambienti e dimensioni installative, confrontata con la cultura popolare e con il linguaggio di massa, sviscerata sul tavolo anatomico della linguistica, scandagliata da sonde etimologiche, l’arte concettuale di Kosuth trova infi ne nella tecnologia signifi cativi strumenti d’espressione e rifl essione. Fra questi, appunto, la luce al neon: intuitivamente associata alla segnaletica, come ricorda lo stesso artista, essa si connette alla pubblicità che infi erisce sulla cultura di massa; ma, utilizzata solamente nella sua materialità, depurata dalle forme popolari, diventa fl uida scrittura plasmabile dall’artista, carica eppure depurata di tutta la sua storia.
