➋ the Heart of Merano
The old town is often identified by its
arcades. But few know that its true
birthplace is located just a few steps
away in the midst of the Steinach district.
Steinach is a small neighbourhood
with three streets and a couple of alleys,
which for was very sleepy for decades.
An enchanted garden, but the average
age of its inhabitants has been rising
steadily and buildings that once housed
local shops and families with children
are now sadly abandoned. It is further
jeopardized by modernization, which is
always just around the corner. A visit is
still worthwhile, however, because of its
architectural details and one-of-a-kind
sights in the Merano region. Here, you
will encounter the proverbial rubbing
shoulders of the old and the new.
➌ thermal Waters
The thermal water at the Merano Thermal
Baths originates from the Vigiljoch/
San Vigilio source above Lana at 1,500
metres above sea level. Thanks to its
therapeutic proprieties, it is used in a
variety of treatments, including thermal
inhalation, which is particularly effective
in the treatment of chronic diseases
of the respiratory tract like chronic
bronchitis, sinusitis or nasal polyposis in
children. Particularly good results have
been recorded in the treatment of asthma.
A study recently conducted by Merano
Thermal Baths in consultation with
Merano Hospital and the University of
Siena has revealed the effectiveness of
thermal inhalation in patients affected
with chronic respiratory diseases.
➍ arunda
In the village of Mölten/Meltina situated
1,200 metres above sea level, you
can find the highest “spumante” winery
in Europe. Joseph reiterer and his family
produce an excellent South Tyrolean
sparkling wine in this village located
above Terlan/Terlano. Today, after being
in business for 30 years, Arunda is the
leading sparkling wine from South Tyrol.
Around 80,000 bottles every year come
out of the cool wine cellars of Meltina.
To make his wine, Sepp reiterer uses
three wines made in South Tyrol, namely,
Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir.
So just like champagne, Chardonnay
provides the wine with character and
finesse, Pinot Blanc gives the structure
and body and Pinot Noir length and
backbone. One of the most delicate
stages in producing the sparkling wine is
the blending, where the wines are made
into a harmonious cuvée. During this
time reiterer receives valuable help from
the whole family, his wife, Marianna, and
his son, Michael, being the main players.
Before being sold, the bottles have
to be stored in icy cellars for 24 months
and the riserva has to rest for up to 40
months. In this way millions of bubbles
are released, which gives the Arunda its
distinctive taste.
