The Aluminium Market in Italy
Data regarding the production
and use of aluminium in Italy
in 2015 were presented during
Centroal’s annual assembly.
The balance is positive with a
growth in use of 4.8%, rolled
products are doing well, foundry
alloys are decreasing slightly and
extruded products give some
signs of recovery
TheannualassemblyofCentroal,Assomet’saluminium
group, that took place in Milan on May 5th, was the occasion
for a presentation of the conclusive data for
2015 concerning the production and use of aluminium
and alloys in Italy. All things considered, in a global economic
context characterised by a slow and uncertain recovery,
the sector seems to be picking up confidence with a small but
clear increase in the total use of metal in Italy that reached
1,898,000 tons, with respect to the 2014 figure of 1,811,200
tons (figure 1). The trend for the use of aluminium in this
country therefore seems more encouraging than the average
for Europe, where the increase in 2015 of the use of
metal in all its forms was just above 1.5% with respect to
the previous year. As a global reference datum, it should be
noted that the worldwide production of primary aluminium
addeduptoover57milliontonsin2015,againstademand
of 56 million, while in 2014 production and use were both
just over 54 million tons.
The statistical scenario regarding semi-finished products,
presented during the Centroal assembly by Andrea Matera
from Assomet’s research centre, pointed out the different
trends in the industry’s segments. Regarding extruded
products, in 2015 there was a moderate upswing
of the segment, especially in the second part of the year,
that seems to be confirmed the trend in the first months
of2016.Thediagraminfigure2showstheprogressfrom
2008 to this date in the production, import, export and use
of profiles in Italy. Total production reached 539,000 tons
in2015,a0.1%increasewithrespectto2014,totalimports
reached 73,000 tons and exports 201,700 tons, both values
being slightly lower than in 2014.
Thetotaluseofextrudedproductsin2015was410,500tons,
that compared to 2014 means a mild increase of 1% (the previous
year’s figure was 406,300 tons). It should however be
notedthatin2008domesticconsumptionwas686,300tons,
and since then demand shrank by over 40%; the positive aspect
of a trend on the increase must therefore be appreciated,
but the strong penalization of this segment is confirmed,
due to the continued crisis of the building and construction
segment, accompanies this year by a marked setback of the
mechanics industry. In the graph in figure 3 it can be seen
thatduringthepastthreeyearstheproductionofextrudedproductsinItalywasstableandsettledaroundfigures
