in water. These were of course definitely cutting-edge applications,
but a real penetration of the market did not occur
until the years around 1940, when rolled Al-Mg plastic
transformation alloys, known in shipyards by their commercial
name, Peraluman, were used for military ships.
Nowadays aluminium alloys are still young, but they are
no longer mysterious at all. Alloys that historically proved
more interesting for use in the naval industry were compositions
in the 5000 Al-Mg series; they present excellent
welding properties and have a high resistance against corrosion.(especiallyinmarineenvironments).Thesealloys
find use most typically in their rolled form (tables 1 and 2).
Extrusions for naval applications
Thesuccessivedevelopmentsintheuseofthelightmetal
were the superstructures of merchant ships, pleasure
crafts and a widespread use in equipment and accessories,
especially as extruded semi-finished goods. We are mainly
referring to 6000 Al-Mg-Si extrusion alloys, showing good
thermal formability, a good combination of properties and
he possibility of being treated with a simple and economical
tempering cycle. These alloys have a composition that
is based on different combinations of the main alligating
substances, magnesium and silica, and on the addition of
minorquantitiesofCu,MnandCr.They havegoodoverall
fields of some of the most popular extrusion aluminium
alloys of the 6000 series, such as 6060 and 6063,
furnishings, lighting, and in the manufacture, for instance,
of fixtures; when greater mechanical resistance is
required, such alloys as 6082 or 6005 are used, most frequently
for semi-structural and structural components in
the automotive sector and for railway vehicles. A summary
