The Aluminium Figures
Prices, back to average
after the spring upsurge
by Paolo Kauffmann, FARO The International Commodities Club
In April the LME price of aluminium
surged by 14% with respect to the
minimumlevelsreachedattheendof
March. The contract with delivery in
3 months peaked at 1686 dollars per
ton, a price that had not been reached
since July 2015. This movement occurredatthesametimeintheShanghai
market, driven by a renewed interest
for raw materials, specifically
metals, shown by investors. The cash
contractforSHFEreached12860yuan
per ton, the highest level since the
end of June 2015. The frenzy was such
as to cause the market to impose new
limits on positions. It is interesting to
note how the best part of the increase
in the LME occurred at the same time
as the progressive reduction of contango
between spot and three-month
sales(seethelowerpartofthegraph).
When the contango trend changed direction,
in the beginning of May, prices
soon went back to the 200-day mobileaverage.Thesechangesareprobably
due both to technical trading operations,
and to fundamental reasons,
although quotations close to 1700
dollars might have led some manufacturers
to carry out coverage operations.Onthesupplyside,inthemeantime,
WBMS noted a small surplus of
9500 tons during the first two months
of the year, not a very encouraging
datum considering that a 311000-ton
deficit had been foreseen for 2015.
The premium market is relatively stable,
with some signs of weakness in Europe,
where an acceleration of withdrawals
from the LME warehouses is
feared.
Ilcontrattoconconsegnaa3mesiha
raggiunto un picco a 1686 dollari per
tonnellata, un livello che non era stato
più raggiunto dal luglio 2015. Il movimento
è avvenuto in contemporanea
con il mercato di Shanghai, spinto da
un rinnovato interesse per le materie
prime, segnatamente per i metalli, degli
investitori. Il contratto cash dello
SHFE ha toccato 12860 yuan per tonnellata,
massimo dalla fine del giugno
2015. L’euforia è stata tale da indurreilmercatoadimporrenuovelimitialleposizioni.Interessantecomela
gran parte della salita sul LME sia avvenuta
in contemporanea con la progressiva
