With its typically Mediterranean atmosphere surrounded by mountains and a splendid lake, Lugano combines all the
characteristics of an elegant metropolis while maintaining the features of a small town. Besides being Switzerland’s third
financial centre and an important conference, banking and business centre, it is also a city of parks and floral gardens, villas
and religious buildings.
Lugano offers a wide variety of attractions to visitors. Much of
its success with tourists comes from the temperate climate,
assisted by the presence of the lake, the mild seasons and a
high percentage of sunny days. Protection of the environment and the
delights of a countryside divided equally between mountains, hills and
plains, guarantee perfect conditions for a holiday at all times of the
year, and a wide choice of activities: from mountain biking on over
300 km of signposted routes to mountain excursions up to 2000
metres, from bathing in the waters of the lake and swimming-pools to
all types of sport, from walking to financial and economic activities
and shopping.
There are stores and shopping centres selling luxury goods, antiques,
souvenirs, handicrafts, not to mention the traditional markets on the
city’s streets and squares offering mainly regional produce.
Known for its good food, our region upholds its culinary tradition and
has an especially large number of excellent restaurants with awards
from prestigious food guides.
But it’s not all haute cuisine: the cellars and canvetti serve mainly local
dishes that celebrate local regional produce and are difficult to find
anywhere else.
Lugano and its entire surrounding area has a strong bias towards
“intelligent” tourism, sustained by cultural events that accord naturally
with the character of this land: from museums to a never-ending
series of shows and concerts, from buildings in the historic centres to
rural housing, through to the modern constructions of the “new
Ticino architecture”, now famous and exported all over the world.
Lugano Tourism
A comprehensive and quality service for “intelligent” tourism
The Lugano region plays host to numerous events throughout the
year. The winter season is characterised by entertainments of various
kinds, including theatrical performances and concerts. From spring to
autumn the calendar becomes even more interesting, with the Lugano
Festival, a music festival dedicated to classical music, the “Estival Jazz”
which holds open-air jazz concerts in Lugano and Mendrisio, the
grand fireworks display for the 1 August celebrations, the “Blues to
Bop” festival and the “Festa d’Autunno” (Autumn Festival).
Conferences, which have been a feature of local tourism for decades,
are not the exclusive preserve of Lugano’s Palazzo dei Congressi but are
also held in many hotels and even in the historic buildings of our
region.
And museums of all kinds put on large temporary exhibitions as well
as holding magnificent permanent collections.
