Today the responsible authorities always demand
preclinical studies as an essential step in the approval
of any clinical protocol. These studies should show
that the transplanted cells are safe (and therefore do
not give rise to tumours) and effective (potency). For
this purpose, in vitro models have been developed
which are validated with in vivo models in collaboration
with the University of Zurich.
Cell transplantation represents a potential treatment
for patients with post-infarction ventricular
dysfunction and left ventricular insufficiency who
have undergone an aortocoronary bypass. The clinical
protocol known as YNSTEM, which has been
submitted to the responsible authorities for approval,
consists of injecting the infarcted area of the
myocardium with a population of selected stem cells,
called CD133, which are potentially capable of
regenerating the vascular walls.
Another important collaboration is ongoing between the Cell Therapy
Unit and the Ospedale Civico di Lugano over an advanced therapy
protocol, directed towards the treatment of peripheral arterial diseases
and which involves a variety of medical sectors, including nephrology,
interventional radiology and angiology.
MOLECULAR DIAGNOSTICS LABORATORY (LDM)
The Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory (LDM) is a structure highly
specialised in applying molecular biology to the diagnosis of genetic
diseases and the detection of microorganisms with molecular
methods. Founded in 1998 in Lugano, where it is still based, it is the
first Swiss laboratory to be specifically and exclusively dedicated to
molecular analysis, performed by routines using gene amplification by
PCR.
Over the years, and with recognised, absolute reliability, the Molecular
Diagnostics Laboratory (LDM) has provided its services to public
hospitals and private clinics, to analytical laboratories and medical
studies all over Switzerland and abroad, continually investing in
progress and research, in particular in the field of pharmacogenetics.
The quality of procedures, efficiency of service – the analyses are
completed and sent back within a day – and professional standards –
all the staff at LDM have had an academic education – all combine to
make the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory a centre of excellence on
the Swiss and European map.
