Assioma has been operating in Ticino since 1994 in one

Today it is a pioneer of “cloud computing”, which provides
companies with personalised information technology
services without them having to invest capital and
resources in creating their own IT infrastructures, and
thus allowing them to concentrate on their own core
business. We spoke to Andrea Cariglia, director of Assioma.
Who is Assioma and what does it offer?
Assioma is a company founded in 1994 by independent professionals
offering professional services and solutions specialised in the integration,
availability and security of networks and systems. In 2001, the opening
of the Lugano-Breganzona data centre, along with the increase in the
number of staff to meet the growing number of requests for a centralised
infrastructure for business applications, marked a particular milestone
in the development of the ICT market.
Among the more innovative solutions that Assioma offers its clients is so-called
“cloud computing”. What does this mean?
Summed up very briefly, it is a service that supplies IT applications
and resources “on demand”. It is highly flexible, and quick and
economical as it eliminates the costs associated with managing IT
personnel and infrastructures. The term “cloud” refers to the graphic
symbol used to represent the Internet. Basically, the client uses all their own
applications without having to worry about the complex technological
environment behind it.
With “cloud computing” the company therefore has no need to invest
in its own air-conditioned and protected areas to house the hardware
(expensive servers and other equipment), or purchase and manage the
software licences. Via a normal Internet connection, the client can
simply connect to the Assioma data centre in Lugano from anywhere
in the world. This allows them, among other things, to dispense with
licensing problems and updates as well as the costs of maintaining and
replacing hardware, updating software, support and managing their
own team of experts. In other words, it is a “pay-per-use” service, paid
according to use and the “ubiquity” of the applications, all elements that
are extremely useful for start-ups, offshore businesses and particularly
practical for SMEs.
Every company has its own requirements when it comes to ICT (Information
and Communication Technology), in other words the use of hardware
and software to create, use and exchange information and data. Is cloud
computing sufficiently customisable?
Certainly. Cloud computing can be tailored to the specific requirements
of any company and is perfectly compatible with the client’s existing

applications. It is comparable to a building in which the business/
client has immediate access to a number of different fully fitted offices,
all personalised to its own taste, complete with everything it needs and
ready for use. It is important to emphasise that the distinctive feature
of Assioma is that, unlike some of the more prestigious players on the
market, we offer our own services with an individual, direct and
personal approach, in which one fundamental value is of enormous
importance: the direct relationship between supplier and client, who
must always be able to know with certainty where and by whom its
own data is being managed.
What level of security does cloud computing provide?
Assioma has accepted as a fundamental prerequisite the fact that its
own data centre must be secure and inviolable. As a result, the client
therefore enjoys the same extremely high standard of data protection
and confidentiality. As with money, which in Switzerland is in a safe
place thanks to an efficient banking system, the data also – which itself
has an increasingly economic value – is in a similarly safe place.
