In the early days, there were
only 31 shipping companies in
the whole of Switzerland that
belonged to the Federation of
International Furniture Removers
(FIDI), two of them in the canton
of Ticino. One of these companies
was Nessi Tranporte AG, now
owned by Mr Antonio Nessi.
The high profile that the company enjoys today is undoubtedly due to
the many years of experience gained since the early years of the last
century and the successful cooperation with FIDI member companies
around the world, from east to west.
Carlo Nessi, the late grandfather of Antonio Nessi,
was the one who began working in the transport
business at the beginning of the last century
when he set up Nessi & Co. The company’s first
commercial activities were based on the transport
of construction materials and fuel.
In 1950, the company changed its name to Trasporti
Nessi & Co. with headquarters in Locarno, and its
management passed to Carlo’s son Arrigo and his brother-in-law, René
Dommen. Arrigo took over the running of the company while René was
responsible for the commercial side of the business.
The company continued to develop, acquiring
the official SBB “Cammionage”, today known as
Cargo Domizil, and quickly established itself on
the international market.
In 1976, Arrigo’s son Antonio, who was then 25,
was brought home from the University of Zurich
and given the task of looking after the “Cargo
Domizil” sector. At this point, Antonio had just
completed his third year of studying to become a mechanical engineer
– fulfilling his own ambition and apparently his destiny too.
Just at the height of the company’s success, a terrible fire broke out on
3 December 1981, destroying the company’s entire warehouse and all
office buildings. Luckily the business was able to carry on, thanks to
the rental of external warehouse space.
In 1982, construction got under way on
new, expanded company premises in the
industrial district of Losone. This made it
possible to centralise all the company’s
structures on the 4,700 m 2 site: offices,
warehouse, factory, garages and caretaker’s
residence on a total surface area of 4,000 m 2 .
In this direction also, Antonio Nessi continues
to apply the same shrewd business sense and
to run the business in accordance with the
same principles handed down from his
grandfather Carlo.
For some years now, son Gianmaria has
been working alongside director Antonio
Nessi. Gianmaria learnt the trade from scratch and now works very
professionally and closely with his father in a sign of the company’s
continuity.
