INTRODUCTION 9
the days of neo-scholasticism, There is too little attention for the
fundamental inability to receive and express the divine mystery in
human concepts and human words. Furthermore, this type of theology
. seems to be not Christian enough, attested by a scarce real influence
of Scripture and a non-Trinitarian, non-Christological approach.
The contributions of Sarot and Rikhof were not planned to
give a portrait of the two types of doing theology, but may in fact be
regarded as such.
The third and final section of this Jaarboek is devoted to smaller
subjects, bearing the character of a chronicle. Pim Valkenberg,
lecturer in Dogmatic theology in Nijmegen, reviews the dissertation of
Anne-Mie Jonckheere, member of our Institute, on Aquinas on divine
predestination. Martin Buijsen, lecturer in the philosophy of Law at
the Erasmus University of Rotterdam, discusses P.M. Hall's book on
Aquinas' doctrine of natural law. Next, Eric Luijten, research fellow
of the Dutch Foundation for Philosophy and Theology, gives a report
of the first congress of the Thomas Instituut, and presents his report
by discussing the Summa contra Gentiles on the sacrament of penance.
Peter Nisse, professor in Church History in Nijmegen, has written an
In Memoriam of his predecessor Jan van Laarhoven, who regrettably
died on November 28th, 1995. Jan van Laarhoven was a prominent
member first of the Werkgroep and later of the Thomas Instituut, even
being a member of the first board of the Institute, before his
retirement. Nisse portrays Jan van Laarhoven as a born teacher, with
many talents of heart and mind, a wide range of interests; an
imaginative and fruitful scholar, whose presence and contributions will
be missed dearly. Next, Lodewijk Winkeler gives his impressions of
the inaugural lecture of prof. Peter Raedts s.j., member of our
Institute, on the occasion of accepting the chair for Medieval History
at the Faculty of Letters of the Catholic University of Nijmegen. And
finally there is the by now customary annual report by the director of
the Thomas Institute.
Starting with this volume, the Jaarboek will have, as the
reader must have noticed, a different physical presentation. As of now
the Jaarboek will by printed by Peeters Orientaliste in Louvain. We
hope that our readership will agree that this is a major improvement.
