The year 1995 has been an important year of changes for the Thomas
Instituut. The financial support on behalf of the Radboudstichting,
which provided us with the means for employing dr. H. Schoot as
secretary of studies, came to an end. This funding has proven to be
fruitful, and so we are very grateful to the Radboudstichting for its
support. Because of his appointment at the Catholic Theological
University of Utrecht, dr. Schoot was able to continue his stimulating
work for the Institute. It was due not only to his efforts that a good
congress was held, but without them it would not have been possible.
At the congress we said goodbye to prof. dr. F.J.A. de Grijs as
director of the Thomas Instituut. The Thomas Instituut owes its
existence to his dedication and inspiration. We owe him many thanks
for his work and know that we can continue to count on him.
An institute like the Thomas Instituut can only exist through
the participation of its members. So, I would like to thank the
members for their, benevolent and critical, cooperation and request
them to continue to do so during the year to come.
1. Study and research in the Thomas Instituut
In the year under review there have been only few alterations in the
pattern of study and research in the Institute. The study of the thought
of Thomas Aquinas in the Netherlands is spread out over many
different research programmes. Inasmuch as the scholars involved are
engaged in our Institute, there are some eleven different programmes
or separate projects in which attention is devoted to Thomas Aquinas.
Section 9 of this report lists 21 projects and 6 programmes in which 9
universities or faculties are involved. The scholars who participate in
the Institute are employed in 16 different universities or institutes.
June 29th Anne-Mie Jonckheere successfully defended her
doctoral thesis at the Theological Faculty of Tilburg; a thesis entitled
God als vrij-geleide voor goed leven en handelen: Thomas van
Aquino's systematische teksten over de predestinatie. Prof. dr. K.-W.
Merks directed this thesis, of which a review can be found in this
Jaarboek. The project at hand is thus finished.
