Resumo - As diferentes teorias de mobilidade nas diversas escalas de análise desde
do urbano, regional ao nacional, têm sido confrontadas com desafios metodológicos
que a evolução tecnológica tem permitido superar. Se, na década de 1980, o grande
desafio era conhecer o grau de interação entre diferentes unidades territoriais a
partir de valores agregados de viagens de geração e atração, o maior problema hoje
em dia é saber quais são esses valores exatamente agregados. Desde então, é
possível quase ter o conhecimento sobre a interação espacial instantaneamente.
Este capítulo aborda os fundamentos de uma metodologia inovadora para o estudo
da mobilidade urbana em São Tomé e Príncipe, mais concretamente na Ilha de São
Tomé com base na análise das interações geradas por alguns tipos de telecomunicações
móveis. É uma demonstração prática de uma metodologia ainda em desenvolvimento
utilizando os geo-data telecommunications traffic minute-by-minute
aplicados ao contexto de maiores dificuldades analíticas, como o caso das cidades
africanas.

Abstract - The study of mobility at various scales, from urban to regional and
even national level, has been confronted with methodological challenges that the
technological evolution has helped to overcome. If, in the 1980s, the great challenge
was to know the degree of interaction between different territorial units starting
from aggregated values of trips of generation and attraction, the greatest problem
nowadays is to know what these aggregate values are exactly. Since then, it is
possible to have knowledge about the spatial interaction almost instantaneously. This
chapter addresses the foundations of an innovative methodology for the study of
urban mobility in São Tomé and Principe, more specifically on the Island of São Tomé,
based on the analysis of the interactions generated by some types of mobile
telecommunications. It is a practical demons-tration of minute-by-minute geodata
telecommunications traffic. Some preliminary findings related to the context of greater
analytical difficulties, as is the case of African cities, will be also discussed.
