ANNOTATIONTallinn UniversityInstituteInstitute of Educational SciencesTitleMedia mediation in Estonian pre-schools: teachers’opinionsResearch Area: Educational SciencesType of Work:Master´s Thesis in EducationalSciencesYear and MonthMay 2012DepartmentEducational SciencesNumber of Pages60SummaryThe growing environment of children is surrounded by the media, that offers them a lot ofunmanageable. So a need has arisen for developing children’s media literacy through mediaeducation. Previous research, conducted among kindergarten teachers, has shown that mediaeducation is important part in parenting and teaching. Media education is part of neither the trainingof kindergarten teachers nor the national educational curriculum of kindergarten. The aim of theresearch is to describe the level of knowledge about media education among kindergarten teachersand to define the willingness of kindergarten teachers to work on media education. The study was conducted using an empirical method in the form of online questionnaire. Thesample consisted of the pedagogical staff of Estonian kindergartens including all the kindergartensin Estonia, based on data from the Estonian Ministry of Education and Research.Key findings:The research showed that most of the respondents knew something about mediaeducation. Attitude towards media education was positive, however passive educational methodswere preferred. Still, kindergarten teachers valued principal aspects of media education. Theirpassivity in the field is explainable with their lack of knowledge and by the fact that there is nocoordinated training of teachers in the field. The role of the kindergarten in media education hasbeen acknowledged. The first hypothesis, being that the kindergarten teachers do not acknowledge the substance ofmedia education, but still think the field of media to be necessary but unfamiliar in kindergartenwork, was confirmed. The second hypothesis, being that the kindergarten teachers think that theparents have a larger role as media educator was confirmed as the parents are thought to have thelargest role in media education. At the same time, in almost half of the aspects of media education, the parents and the teachers were thought to have equal roles. In addition, most of the respondentsfound that they can collaborate with the homes in the field of media education in all of the proposedmethods.Võtmesõnad: Meediakasvatus, õpetajakoolitus, lasteaedKeywords: Media education, teacher training, pre-schoolDeposited : Academical Library of Tallinn UniversityAuthor: Deivi PardSignature:Accepted:Mentor: Kristi Vinter Signature:
