Counterfactuality and other implicatures in conditionals

Counterfactual conditional utterances convey that the speaker considers the conditional
antecedent to be false, while indicative conditionals do not. This is a pragmatic matter,
however, since it can be shown that seemingly counterfactual utterances are consistent with
affirmations of their antecedents. This course will investigate the pragmatics of indicative vs.
subjunctive conditionals in general and the derivation of the implicature of counterfactuality in
particular. To do so, we will study the construction of conditionals, including the contributions
of tense, aspect, aktionsart, and modality.

von Abstracts und Papieren sowie das Vortragen auf Konferenze wird geübt. Das Kolloquium
bietet weiterhin die Möglichkeit, relevante Fachliteratur zu diskutieren.
