This course is open only to students of BA Sprachwissenschaft and British and American
Studies (BAST). The course consists of two parts:
Part I: From Old English to Middle English
- The Indo-European and Germanic Background to English;
- Old English: Language and culture;
- Towards Middle English: Change with and without language contact.
Part II: From Middle English to Modern English
- Chaucer’s English and sound change to Modern English;
- the extension of the English lexicon (1500 - 1650);
- the emergence and the functions of a standard form of English (standard English) (1400 -
1800);
- “globalization” of English from 1600 to the present day

This course introduces students to the phonology of (some varieties of) Present-day English.
We will focus on the phoneme inventory of the English language (and on how to identify and
characterise phonemes), on phonological rules, syllable structure, connected speech
processes, as well as some other aspects of the phonology of English.
