Tudor places between 1931 and 1936 29 ) suggests this shift <strong>of</strong> focus;<br />

horror being a reaction to something seen or experienced, as opposed<br />

to terror, an emotion which arises in response to an imagined or psychically<br />

experienced threat. Certainly, <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ‘beast within’<br />

was increasingly literalized in this context, with Universal Pictures<br />

starting preparations for <strong>the</strong> fi rst werewolf feature fi lm in 1932, which<br />

was eventually released as <strong>The</strong> <strong>Wer</strong>ewolf <strong>of</strong> London in 1935. This fi lm<br />

set a number <strong>of</strong> prece<strong>de</strong>nts for <strong>the</strong> werewolf fi lm subgenre, not least<br />

<strong>of</strong> which was <strong>the</strong> representation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> werewolf as male. Fur<strong>the</strong>r,<br />

<strong>the</strong> problem <strong>of</strong> turning an actor into a wolf resulted in a more hybrid<br />

kind <strong>of</strong> monster created by make-up artist Jack Pierce and animated<br />
