WEREWOLVES AND SCHOLARS<br />

Despite <strong>the</strong> fanciful connotations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> title page, <strong>the</strong> introductory<br />

notes to William and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Wer</strong>wolf set <strong>the</strong> tone for <strong>the</strong> empirically<br />

motivated genealogical studies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> werewolf myth that were to<br />

fl ower between <strong>the</strong> late 1850s and about 1875. In addition to <strong>the</strong> introductory<br />

comments by <strong>the</strong> editor, which link <strong>the</strong> werewolf with <strong>the</strong><br />

berserker traditions <strong>of</strong> Norse mythology popularized by Scott as well<br />

as referring to an early-mo<strong>de</strong>rn tract on lycanthropy by <strong>the</strong> French<br />

<strong>de</strong>monologist Henri Boguet, 28 <strong>the</strong> book contains a discussion ‘On <strong>Wer</strong>ewolves’<br />

by Algernon Herbert. Although Herbert began his piece with<br />
