18.4 Searching classifications of the European Patent Office
When assigning classifications to the technical aspects of a patent application the examiners in the European Patent
Office use the European Patent Classification EPC (also known as ECLA) and an internal supplementary classification
ICO (In Computer Only). Some old documents even contain the IDT (Indeling der Techniek).
18.4.1 European Patent Classification (EPC)
The European Patent Classification (ECLA, EPC) is an extension to the International Patent Classification and is
examination. STN
currently enters this classification in AUPATFULL, CANPATFULL, CA, DWPI, INPADOCDB, INPAFAMDB and
RDISCLOSURE. The classification text can be found on the Internet:

The descriptions of ECLA (EPC and ICO) are available for download from the server of FIZ Karlsruhe. The links to the
monthly files can be found in INPADOCDB/INPAFAMDB file banner. There is one total file and one supplement for
each update. The PDF files can be searched using the Acrobat Reader. New, changed and deleted classifications are
marked by e.g. [N0901] = new in January 2009 (C = changed; D = deleted).
