The advantage of the legal status categories lies in the easy access <strong>to</strong> specific legal status information. They are:<br />
Reliable and easy <strong>to</strong> use,<br />
Well suited for specific needs of legal status moni<strong>to</strong>ring,<br />
Current, as new codes and code definitions are constantly updated.<br />
Anyway, note that the legal status categories are no more than a convenient summary of existing legal status code<br />
entries. Always consider these additional notes (see also the Moni<strong>to</strong>ring search example):<br />
NIF in EP or WO applications does not mean that all Designated States are concerned<br />
Lapse of a patent or application (denoted by NIF) can be reversed by a later event (e.g. reinstatement or<br />
Supplementary Protection Certificate, SPC)<br />
ORE does not include NO OPPOSITION<br />
SPC not only covers Supplementary Protection Certificates but also all other extensions of the term of an IP<br />
right (including e.g. renewal of utility models)<br />
23.4 PATDPA<br />
The PATDPA database is no longer updated from 7/2011, i.e. also legal status information is no longer updated.<br />
PATDPA contains legal status information of German patent publications since 1981 and of European patent<br />
publications since 1998 in the NTE field. (The legal status on EP publications before this date concerns the<br />
designations in German only.) The legal status information of EP publications also contains data from the national<br />
phase of the designated states. The legal status is part of e.g. the NTE, ALL, and MAX formats.<br />
