ECLA codes are available for all publications where the classification is assigned by the European <strong>Patent</strong> Office (PCT<br />
minimum documentation). This way about half of all documents are accessible using an ECLA code.<br />
Note: The ECLA is updated quite frequently (see the file banner in INPADOCDB and INPAFAMDB). So the codes<br />
should be checked before every search using them. It is also important <strong>to</strong> note that as a rule the ECLA codes are not<br />
available immediately when a new document is entered in the database but that they are often added later.<br />
18.4.2 ICO Classification<br />
The ICO classification was newly introduced and offers additional potential for in-depth searching. The EPO uses ICO<br />
codes <strong>to</strong> index additional aspects of an invention.<br />
Most ICO codes are similar <strong>to</strong> EPC codes; in place of A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H the letters K, L, M, N, P, R, S, T are used as the<br />
first letter.
