20.4.3 Japan<br />
An inconvenience of Japanese patent publications is that the names of inven<strong>to</strong>rs and assignees need <strong>to</strong> be<br />
converted from Japanese characters (as shown on the document) <strong>to</strong> Roman characters (the way they appear in the<br />
database).<br />
Japanese proper names are written in Chinese characters (Kanji). Kanji may have various readings and<br />
hence completely different pronunciations. A conversion in<strong>to</strong> Roman characters yields, therefore, not<br />
always clear results.<br />
Foreign proper names are converted according <strong>to</strong> their pronunciation in<strong>to</strong> Japanese syllable writing<br />
(Katakana). For integration in the database they are re-converted following specific rules. In particular<br />
accumulations of consonants frequently found in European names cannot be converted adequately in<strong>to</strong><br />
Katakana. As a result, foreign names are in most cases not recognizable after two consecutive conversions.<br />
