Changed text substances (e.g. introduction of abstracts from a certain date) may have an influence on search<br />

results. For the time after the introduction of a new text substance the number of hits of a text search may be<br />

considerably higher. This should particularly be taken in<strong>to</strong> account when performing statistical analyses as the<br />

search result is more complete for the documents having the new text substance. In turn, with the same search<br />

strategy the search result will be less complete for earlier documents not having the extra text substance.<br />

In some databases (in particular those following the dynamical principle) text substances may be added <strong>to</strong> already<br />

existing documents. This must be considered when doing a current awareness search. There exist update fields <strong>to</strong><br />

take this in<strong>to</strong> account (cf. Moni<strong>to</strong>ring patents ).<br />

Abbreviations. In some databases, such as World <strong>Patent</strong>s Index and Chemical Abstracts, where the text substances<br />

(Title, Abstract, Index terms) are edited by the database producer, there are abbreviation lists for abbreviations<br />

often used in the documents. These abbreviations must be considered in a search, the result otherwise being<br />
