with the Upland Garden (Vegetable Garden)<br />

in front and the Medical Garden behind it.<br />

A small orchard is enclosed with a fence.<br />

During their first 10 years in North Carolina, the Moravians<br />

grew primarily European vegetables, herbs, flowers, and field<br />

crops.<br />

These plants had been cultivated in the Old World by<br />

Moravians for years and <strong>of</strong>ten centuries.<br />

New World crops such as Irish potatoes, corn, pumpkins, tobacco,<br />

beans, Spanish peppers, sunflowers, and nasturtiums.<br />

They also grew some<br />

plants were obtained from many sources, including Germany,<br />

Seeds and<br />

Pennsylvania, Charleston, South Carolina, and North Carolina.<br />
