Cut each root crosswise into 2-inch lengths;<br />

then slice each piece lengthwise into 4-8<br />

segments.<br />

Add 2 cups <strong>of</strong> elecampane root pieces to 2 cups<br />

water and 2 cups sugar<br />

Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer until<br />

elecampane is tender<br />

Drain the elecampane and bottle syrup<br />

Syrup is an excellent cough remedy<br />

A. Miksch Garden<br />

1. Soil preparation<br />

a. Double-dig:<br />

1) bed containing yarrow; lift existing plants,<br />

dig bed, reset plants adding yarrow trans-<br />

plants from greenhouse.<br />

2) hyssop bed at site <strong>of</strong> former redbud<br />

(Cercis canadensis) tree<br />

3) southernwood bed; lift existing plants,<br />

dig bed, fill with additional stock from<br />

greenhouse.<br />

4) sorrel bed (following same procedure as out-<br />

lined above)<br />

Fertilizing<br />

a. Apply ashes from dye pot fires to garden vege-<br />

tables with high potash requirements, such as<br />

potatoes, beets, and onions. Potash helps<br />

strengthen stem and leaf growth and improves<br />

root crops.<br />

b. Add manure, compost, bone and blood meal, (from<br />

the Moravian slaughterhouse in past times) or<br />

other organic fertilizers when preparing garden<br />

beds and during plant growth.<br />
