D. Salem Family Gardens<br />
Interpretive Highlight: The cultivation <strong>of</strong> food gardens which<br />
provided a major part <strong>of</strong> the Moravian family's food needs<br />
(Although all <strong>of</strong> the family gardens along Salt Street,<br />
between Academy and Bank Streets, have been re-created for<br />
public enjoyment, only the Eberhardt, Leinbach, and Cape<br />
Fear Bank lots are highlighted in this manual.)<br />
1. Eberhardt Garden<br />
a. Emphasize that the garden exists on the lot <strong>of</strong> a house<br />
now missing. The original gardens would have been 10-<br />
cated further back on the lot in the vicinity <strong>of</strong> the:<br />
white pine trees planted within the last 15 years to<br />
screen the Old Salem bypass.<br />
b. Point out the diagonal planting pattern in the 4<br />
garden beds.<br />
c. Show the red currant bushes (Ribes rubrum) dominating<br />
the corners <strong>of</strong> the garden beds.<br />
d. Mention the peach trees lining the fenceline <strong>of</strong> the<br />
adjacent lot.<br />
e. Highlight the following landscape features:<br />
1) Beehives made <strong>of</strong> sawn lumber<br />
2) Primitive compost bin<br />
3) Garden benches<br />
2. Leinbach Garden<br />
a. Use the Leinbach Garden to illustrate the characteristic<br />
layout <strong>of</strong> Salem houses, yards, and gardens.<br />
b. Explain the need for terracing Salem yards to provide<br />
level areas on which to garden. Specifically mention:<br />
1) 3 garden terraces which were carefully re-created<br />
following Leinbach family records and recollections<br />
2) Rock walls which reinforce terrace banks<br />
3) Bleaching qreen on the uppermost terrace<br />
c. Point out the interplanting <strong>of</strong> vegetables, herbs, and<br />
flowers in garden beds, stressing the efficient use<br />
<strong>of</strong> space through:<br />
