Interpretive Highlights<br />

Lots in Salem were divided into zones for house,<br />

yard, and garden.<br />

Houses were built with direct access to the<br />

street - front yards were uncommon.<br />

Functional yards were fenced <strong>of</strong>f to the sides<br />

and behind the house - used for household<br />

activities and recreation.<br />

Garden space was divided into rectangular/square<br />

plots for vegetables, herbs, flowers, and small<br />

fruits; gardens were always fences and frequently<br />

bordered by fruit trees.<br />
