Example Interpretive Schedules<br />

The following lists <strong>of</strong> interpretive gardening activities<br />

were prepared for the 1981 summer season. They serve as<br />

useful models for continual garden interpretation at Old<br />

Salem.<br />

I. HERBS: Their culture, harvest, and use<br />

A. Miksch Garden<br />

Dress herbs weekly; dressing refers to the process<br />

<strong>of</strong> cleaning dead leaves and stems from the plants<br />

and weeding.<br />

a. Dead head (clean faded flowers):<br />

1) blessed thistles<br />

2) musk and apothecary roses<br />

3) thyme<br />

Irrigate (water) individual herb beds with watering<br />

cans as needed, especially those beds which quickly<br />

drain at the upper end <strong>of</strong> the garden.<br />

Continue to sow thin plantings <strong>of</strong> parsley, dill,<br />

carraway, and fennel through the end <strong>of</strong> June into<br />

the first two weeks in July: sow -- in situ (where<br />

they are to grow)_.<br />

Continue propagation <strong>of</strong> medicinal and culinary<br />

herbs from either stem cuttings or division <strong>of</strong><br />

established plants.<br />

a. Propagate from cuttings:<br />

1) southernwood<br />

2) rosemary<br />

3) lavender<br />

Make successive harvests <strong>of</strong> culinary and medicinal<br />

herbs through July, August, and September.<br />

a. Harvest and air dry:<br />

thyme leaves during flowering<br />

horehound leaves<br />

lavender flower spikes when in bloom<br />

rosemary leaves anytime<br />

lemon balm leaves<br />

chamomile flowers<br />

basil leaves just prior to flowering<br />

dill leaves and ripe seed heads<br />

sage leaves anytime<br />
