Tour Interpretation (For use by guides and hostesses interpreting<br />

exhibit buildings to visitors)<br />

Primary Objectives :<br />

0 To acquaint visitors with 18th and 19th century Salem<br />

yards and gardens.<br />

To highlight key landscape features around museum<br />

buildings in Old Salem.<br />

(Interpretive highlights and primary landscape features for each<br />

historic building operated by Old Salem, Inc. are outlined in the<br />

following pages. Key words are underlined. Refer to Appendices<br />

for more specific information on specific plants.)<br />

A. Miksch Lot<br />

Interpretive Hiqhlight: Horticulture at its earliest period<br />

in the Wachovia tract, 1753-1766.<br />

1, Describe the characteristic layout<br />

Shop', yard, and gardens.<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Miksch Tobacco<br />

a. Tobacco Shop and residence built directly on the street<br />

without a front yard<br />

b. Service yard <strong>of</strong> swept dirt enclosed behind the house -<br />

includes the Miksch Manufactory<br />

c. Gardens and orchards cultivated to the rear <strong>of</strong> the<br />

service yard<br />

2. Explain that gardens in the Miksch and Triebel lots are<br />

inspired by descriptions, drawings, and inventories <strong>of</strong><br />

early Bethabara gardens.<br />

a. Garden<br />

1) Design <strong>of</strong> the re-created Miksch garden is based on<br />

the 1761 plan <strong>of</strong> the Medical Garden (Hortus Medicus)<br />

at Bethabara<br />

2) Garden is reflection <strong>of</strong> medieval botanical and physic<br />

gardens; it is not solely an herb garden<br />

3) One medicinal plant grown in each rectangular,<br />

triangular, or circular bed in garden<br />
