ISL222 TEXTUAL STUDIES OF THE HADITH<br />

Translation<br />

<strong>Hadith</strong> 10<br />

On <strong>the</strong> authority <strong>of</strong> Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) who<br />

said: The messenger <strong>of</strong> Allah (may Allah bless him and give him peace)<br />

said: indeed Allah is Good and does not accept but what is good. And<br />

certainly He has commanded <strong>the</strong> believers with what he had already<br />

commanded <strong>the</strong> messengers. The most high said (in <strong>the</strong> Qur’ran): O you<br />

messengers eat out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> good things and work righteously, and <strong>the</strong><br />

Most High has also said (in <strong>the</strong> Qur’ran): O you who believe, eat <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

good things which have been provided for you “<strong>the</strong>n he (<strong>the</strong> Prophet)<br />

mentioned a man who makes a long journey, appears dishelved and<br />

covered with dust, streching his hand towards <strong>the</strong> sky and saying: Oh<br />

my Lord! Oh my Lord! But his food is unlawful, his drink is unlawful,<br />

his dress his unlawful and he is already fed with what is unlawful. So<br />

how could his prayer be accepted <strong>the</strong>n?” Muslims related it.<br />

Commentary<br />

In this hadith, believers are warned against eating and drinking from<br />

sources considered forbidden and unlawful adding that we should only<br />

eat from good things that we have been provided with. The good things<br />

are generally referred to as Halāl.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> contrary, <strong>the</strong> prohibited things are generally referred to as<br />

Harām.<br />

Lessons<br />

The following lessons are derivable from <strong>the</strong> hadith:<br />

1. Almighty Allah is good.<br />

2. Allah does not accept anything that is not good.<br />

3. Cleanliness is encouraged.<br />

4. Food and drinks can be regarded as good (Tayyib) only if <strong>the</strong>y<br />

are nourishing and not forbidden in Islam.<br />

5. Devotional deed will be regarded as good (Tayyib) if it is done<br />

with full dedication to Allah.<br />

6. Our means <strong>of</strong> livelihood should not conflict with <strong>the</strong> basic tenets<br />

and principles <strong>of</strong> Islam if we want <strong>the</strong> Almighty Allah to answer<br />

our supplications.<br />
