oil, full strength, may be applied with advantage to all sprains <strong>and</strong><br />

bruises <strong>and</strong> to lumbago, rheumatism. <strong>and</strong> sciatica, also in herpes, moist<br />

eczema, fevers <strong>and</strong> psoriasis. It is also a good stimulating expectorant in<br />

chronic bronchitis <strong>and</strong> chronic coughs.<br />

A tincture of the fresh inner bark of the hemlock may be employed in<br />

obstinate leucorrhea, diluted with two parts of water, being applied to the<br />

vagina on cotton, at intervals of several hours to secure a continuous<br />

effect.<br />

CATECHU. Acacia catechu<br />

Synonym—Terra Japonica.<br />

CONSTITUENTS—<br />

Catechu, tannic acid, catechin, quercetin, Catechu-red, gum.<br />

PREPARATlONS—<br />

Tinctura Catechu Composita. Compound Tincture of Catechu.<br />

Dose, from ten to forty minims.<br />

Therapy—A tonic astringent indicated in diarrheas where the discharges<br />

are serous, very watery in character-large fluid discharges, with mucus.<br />

It will relieve intestinal hemorrhage, when the above diarrheas are<br />

present, <strong>and</strong> the mucous membranes are relaxed, <strong>and</strong> out of tone. If<br />

combined with stimulant tonics or aromatics it is more serviceable. With<br />

special uterine tonics, it will be found advantageous in menorrhagia.<br />

ACHILLEA. Achillea millefolium<br />

Synonym—Yarrow.<br />

CONSTITUENTS—<br />

Achillein, volatile oil, tannin, achilleic acid.<br />

PREPARATIONS—<br />

Specific Achillea. Dose, from five to sixty minims.<br />

Specific Symptomatology—The following indications will guide in the<br />

selection of this remedy: Hot, dry burning skin, at the beginning of acute<br />

asthenic fevers, with suppressed secretion; deficient renal action, with<br />

Ellingwood’s <strong>American</strong> <strong>Materia</strong> <strong>Medica</strong>, <strong>Therapeutics</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Pharmacognosy</strong> - Page 2
