The agent has long been a domestic remedy in the treatment of<br />

rheumatism. A fomentation is prepared from the leaves or the steam from<br />

a decoction is confined to the part, or compresses are wrung from a<br />

strong infusion of the leaves, <strong>and</strong> applied.<br />

One-half drop doses of the mulleined oil four times a day has overcome<br />

some dribbling of the urine. This remedy seems to be serviceable as an<br />

external application to inflamed gl<strong>and</strong>s.<br />

Dr. Mathews says that this is an excellent agent in the treatment of<br />

conditions where there is persistent acridity of the urine, especially if it<br />

produces pain or strangury.<br />

Verbascum is useful for the treatment of orchitis. It can be used internally<br />

<strong>and</strong> externally.<br />

LEPTANDRA. Lept<strong>and</strong>ra virginica.<br />

Synonyms—Veronicastrum Virginicum, Linne; Culver's Root.<br />

CONSTITUENTS—<br />

Lept<strong>and</strong>rin, resin, saponin, tannin, mannite, gum, citric acid,<br />

volatile oil.<br />

PREPARATIONS—<br />

Resin of Lept<strong>and</strong>ra, Lept<strong>and</strong>rin. Dose, from one-fourth to one grain.<br />

Extractum Lept<strong>and</strong>rae Fluidum, Fluid Extract of Lept<strong>and</strong>ra. Dose,<br />

from twenty to sixty minims.<br />

Specific Medicine Lept<strong>and</strong>ra. Dose, from one to twenty minims.<br />

Specific Symptomatology—Malaise from malarial influence, soreness on<br />

pressure in the right hypochondrium, with wide dullness on percussion,<br />

constipation, full abdominal tissues with inactive intestinal gl<strong>and</strong>s,<br />

torpor of the liver, anorexia, dull headache. Also in cases in which there<br />

are marked vertigo, cold extremities <strong>and</strong> cool skin, dull pain in the<br />

bowels, gloominess or mental despondency <strong>and</strong> depression,<br />

disinclination to work or even move, great lassitude.<br />

Therapy—In malarial conditions no cathartic is more efficient than<br />

lept<strong>and</strong>ra. It may be given in full doses, <strong>and</strong> there is no irritation from its<br />

action. It certainly increases the discharge of bile <strong>and</strong> stimulates <strong>and</strong><br />
