Specific Lappa. Dose, from five to thirty drops.<br />

Therapy—This agent closely resembles yellow dock in its action as an<br />

alterative; it has a direct influence upon the blood, <strong>and</strong> thence. upon<br />

diseases of the skin <strong>and</strong> mucous membranes. Its influence upon the<br />

mucous membranes of the stomach encourages normal gl<strong>and</strong>ular<br />

secretion <strong>and</strong> promotes digestion. In aphthous ulcerations of these<br />

membranes <strong>and</strong> in catarrhal ulcerations, it is excellent.<br />

It influences the mucous membranes of the air passages when irritated<br />

from any blood disorder, alleviating irritable coughs.<br />

It cures psoriasis <strong>and</strong> chronic cutaneous eruptions.<br />

It has a marked influence upon chronic gl<strong>and</strong>ular enlargements, <strong>and</strong> is<br />

beneficial in syphilitic, scrofulous <strong>and</strong> gouty conditions.<br />

It relieves irritation of the urinary apparatus, promoting a free flow of the<br />

urine containing urea, uric acid, <strong>and</strong> a full quantity of excrete solids.<br />

UVA URSI. Arctostaphylos uva ursi.<br />

Synonym—Bearberry.<br />

CONSTITUENTS—<br />

Gallic acid, tannin, resin, sugar, arbutin, ericalin.<br />

PREPARATIONS—<br />

Extractum uvae ursi fluidum, fluid extract of uva ursi. Dose, from<br />

ten to sixty minims.<br />

Physiological Action—Uva ursi has long been in general use as a diuretic<br />

<strong>and</strong> sedative to the general urinary apparatus. It exercises both an<br />

astringent <strong>and</strong> tonic influence also, <strong>and</strong> it is prescribed when there are<br />

calculi present.<br />

Specific Symptomatology—Its direct influence is upon relaxed<br />

conditions of the bladder walls, to which it imparts tone <strong>and</strong> induces<br />

normal contraction. It restrains excessive mucous discharges.<br />

Therapy—It is curative in ulceration of the bladder wall, in cystitis, in<br />

Ellingwood’s <strong>American</strong> <strong>Materia</strong> <strong>Medica</strong>, <strong>Therapeutics</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Pharmacognosy</strong> - Page 47
