SANDALWOOD. Santalum album.<br />

Synonyms—Yellow Saunders, White Saunders.<br />

Part Employed—The wood.<br />

PREPARATIONS—<br />

Fluid Extract of S<strong>and</strong>alwood, not miscible with water. Dose, onehalf<br />

to two fluid drams.<br />

S<strong>and</strong>al Oil, dose, ten minims.<br />

Admistration—The oil of s<strong>and</strong>alwood is administered in doses of from ten<br />

to fifteen or even twenty minims three times daily. It is best given in a<br />

capsule, <strong>and</strong> soft gelatine capsules are prepared filled with the oil. It is<br />

also given in emulsion, but there are objections to this method of<br />

administration.<br />

Therapy—The oil of santal is of service in the treatment of sub-acute <strong>and</strong><br />

chronic inflammations of mucous surfaces, especially those wherein<br />

there is excessive secretion. In catarrhal bronchitis it is beneficial,<br />

quickly allaying irritation <strong>and</strong> reducing the excessive discharge.<br />

It is in more general use in the treatment of gonorrhea after the<br />

subsidence of the acute or active inflammatory phenomena. It will be<br />

found of service in the treatment of protracted cases, <strong>and</strong> in gleet.<br />

SAPIUM. Sapium salicifolium.<br />

Synonym—Yerba de la flecha.<br />

PART EMPLOYED—The root, bark <strong>and</strong> leaves.<br />

LOCALITY—Mexico, New Mexico <strong>and</strong> Arizona.<br />

PREPARATIONS—<br />

Powdered Root. Dose, from one-half to one grain.<br />

Fluid Extract. Dose, from one to five minims.<br />

Infusion. Two ounces of the root to one pint of water. Dose, from<br />

twenty to thirty minims.<br />
